Board Elections

The board of trustees is elected by the citizens of the district to represent the community’s commitment

to a strong educational program  for the district’s children. Trustees are elected at-large annually in May and

serve three-year terms. Board members serve without compensation, must be qualified voters, and must reside in the district.

  • 2025 Candidate Information

    • Pick up a candidate packet in the Covington ISD Administration Office. Packets will be available on January 6, 2025

    on the Covington ISD School Board.

    The following current board members terms expire May 2025: Andy Lopez and Freedom Jay.

Archived Elections

  • Information is not yet available. Election is May 3, 2025. 

  • The purpose of the election was to elect three individuals to serve full three-year terms as trustees on the Covington Independent School District school board of trustees. Cody Nickell, Kevin Ray, and Joe Reitz were the only candidates that submitted applications. By order of the Board of Trustees, the election was cancelled and the three candidates were certified as unopposed and elected to the board of trustees to serve full three-year terms.

    Cody Nickell, Kevin Ray, and Joe Reitz will be sworn in during the June 10, 2024 board meeting.

    Adoption of Order Canvassing Returns and Declaring

    RESULTS OF BOND ELECTION

    WHEREAS, on November 7, 2023, there was held within and throughout the territory of the Covington Independent School District (the “District”) an election (the “Election”) at which the following proposition was submitted to the resident, qualified electors of the District, to-wit:

    PROPOSITION A

    SHALL THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES (THE “BOARD”) OF THE COVINGTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT (THE “DISTRICT”) BE AUTHORIZED TO ISSUE BONDS OF THE DISTRICT, IN ONE OR MORE SERIES OR INSTALLMENTS, IN THE AMOUNT OF $9,970,000 FOR THE CONSTRUCTION, RENOVATION, EXPANSION, AND EQUIPMENT OF SCHOOL FACILITIES IN THE DISTRICT, WHICH BONDS SHALL MATURE, BEAR INTEREST AND BE ISSUED AND SOLD IN ACCORDANCE WITH LAW AT THE TIME OF ISSUANCE; AND SHALL THE BOARD BE AUTHORIZED TO LEVY, IMPOSE AND PLEDGE, AND CAUSE TO BE ASSESSED AND COLLECTED, ANNUAL AD VALOREM TAXES ON ALL TAXABLE PROPERTY IN THE DISTRICT SUFFICIENT, WITHOUT LIMIT AS TO RATE OR AMOUNT, TO PAY THE PRINCIPAL OF AND INTEREST ON THE BONDS, ALL AS AUTHORIZED BY THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS OF THE STATE OF TEXAS AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

    WHEREAS, the tabulation of the results of the Election on Proposition A was as follows:

    143      Votes “For”

    136      Votes “Against”

    NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS ORDERED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE COVINGTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT:

    Section 1.        Election Results.  The Election was duly called and notice thereof given in accordance with law; the Election was held in the manner required by law; only resident, qualified electors of the District voted at the Election; a written return of the election results was made to the District in accordance with the Election Code; and the resident, qualified electors of the District voting in the Election, including absentee voting, voted “FOR” or “AGAINST” Proposition A, as noted above.

    Section 2.        Tabulation of Votes.  The official returns shall be delivered to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees, who is hereby directed to enter in the Election register the tabulation of the votes cast for and against Proposition A and to preserve such tabulations as required by law. 

    Section 3.        Notice of Meeting.  The Board of Trustees officially finds, determines, recites and declares that written notice of the date, hour, place and subject of the meeting at which this Order is adopted was posted on a bulletin board located at a place convenient to the public at the District's administrative offices for at least 72 hours preceding the scheduled time of the meeting; that a telephonic or telegraphic notice of such meeting was given to all news media who have consented to pay any and all expenses incurred by the District in connection with providing such notice, both as required by Chapter 551, Texas Government Code; and that such meeting was open to the public as required by law at all times during which this Order and the subject matter thereof was discussed, considered and formally acted upon.

     

    Section 4.        Effective DateThis Order is effective immediately upon its passage and approval.

  • The purpose of the election was to elect two individuals to serve full three-year terms as trustees on the Covington Independent School District school board of trustees. Georgia Whittington and J.D. Kaye were the only candidates that submitted applications. By order of the Board of Trustees, the election was cancelled and the two candidates were certified as unopposed and elected to the board of trustees to serve full three-year terms.

    Georgia Whittington and J.D.Kaye were sworn in during the June 20, 2023 board meeting.

  • The purpose of the election was to elect two individuals to serve full three-year terms as trustees on the Covington Independent School District school board of trustees. Andy Lopez received 48 votes, J.D. Kaye received 47 votes, and Freedom Jay received 64 votes. A total of 111 registered voters voted in the election. Andy Lopez and Freedom Jay were elected by plurality to full three-year terms.

    Andy Lopez and Freedom Jay were sworn in during the June 20, 2022 board meeting.

  • The purpose of the election was to break the tie that occurred in the May 1, 2021 election between Joe Reitz and David Shane Johnson.  Joe Reitz received 50 votes and David Shane Johnson received 49 votes. A total of 99 registered voters voted in the election. Joe Reitz was elected by plurality to a full three year term. Joe Reitz was sworn in during the June 10, 2021 board meeting and began serving.

  • The purpose of the election was to elect three individuals to serve full three-year terms as trustees on the Covington Independent School District school board of trustees. Kevin Ray received 63 votes, Joe Reitz received 36 votes, Cody Nickell received 56 votes, and Shane Johnson received 36 votes. A total of 98 registered voters voted in the election. Kevin Ray and Cody Nickell were elected by plurality to full three-year terms. Joe Reitz and David Shane Johnson tied. A special election was called for June 5, 2021, to break the tie.

    Kevin Ray and Cody Nickell were sworn in during the May 10, 2021 board meeting and began serving.

  • The purpose of the election was to elect two individuals to serve full three year terms as trustees on the Covington Independent School District school board of trustees. Chris Lidster and Georgia Whittington were current members holding the two at-large positions.
